Inaugural Conference of the Asia-Oceanic Federation of Anti-Aging Medicine:
Addressing the Needs of the World's Most Rapidly Aging Region

The A4M and its sister organization, the World Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (WAAAM), proudly serve as the governing bodies overseeing all national and regional federations including KA3M and AOFAAM. This coordination enables the free exchange and promulgation of scientific ideas as well as the centralization of anti-aging medical and scientific data to further the specialty's recognition and adoption worldwide.

September 20, 2004 Chicago, IL / As the 5th Annual Anti-Aging Conference hosted by the Korean Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (KA3M; www.ka3m.or.kr), this first inaugural meeting of the of the Asia-Oceanic Federation of Anti-Aging Medicine (AOFAAM; www.aofaam.org), comprised of member nations including South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand, convened in Seoul on 11-12 September 2004.

Dr. Robert Goldman, A4M Chairman, was present to congratulate the AOFAAM's successful launch, remarking that "South Korea is an appropriate venue for the AOFAAM's inaugural conference, as the nation is aging quickly. Experts estimate that by the year 2019, 14% of the South Korean population will be age 65 or older." Indeed, The Korea Times has reported that the South Korean government is alarmed at the impending "social and economic burden caused by a rapidly aging society" [The Korea Times, 30 October 2003]. Dr. Goldman observes that "the efforts of KA3M's Chairman, Cheol Ho Kim, MD, PhD, in advancing anti-aging medical and scientific innovation in Korea, are commendable; likewise, I applaud AOFAAM's Organizing Secretariat, Seung-Yup Ku, MD, PhD, ABAAM, for taking the initiative to unify nations in the Asia-Pacific under a regional anti-aging scientific federation."


Representatives of the member nations of AOFAAM, along with Dr. Robert Goldman, A4M President, officiate the Federation's launch, displaying official, signed Memorandums of Understanding that codify the formation of the Federation.

The scientific program was very wide in its scope, covering topics including basics of hormone chemistry, hormone replacement therapies, stem cells, cloning, and a broad array of aspects of all specialties of medicine. Shin Yong Moon, MD, PhD, one of 100 Figures of The Year as identified by Time Magazine, was a featured lecturer on the topic of stem cell research and clinical applications. The sessions were opened by Cheol Ho Kim, MD, PhD and Young Kyun Kim MD, PhD, and Phong Sahm Ku, MD, PhD.

In conjunction with this 5th Annual Meeting of the KA3M, the organization unveiled its new peer-reviewed medical journal, The Korean Journal of Anti-Aging Medicine. Similarly, the AOFAAM also debuted its official publication, the peer-reviewed Journal of Anti-Aging Medical Research. The A4M commends both of these important efforts in ongoing education and training in the anti-aging medical specialty throughout Asia.
