September 20, 2004 Chicago, IL / As the 5th Annual Anti-Aging
Conference hosted by the Korean Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine
(KA3M; www.ka3m.or.kr), this first inaugural meeting of the of
the Asia-Oceanic Federation of Anti-Aging Medicine (AOFAAM; www.aofaam.org),
comprised of member nations including South Korea, Singapore,
Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand, convened in Seoul on 11-12 September
2004.
Dr.
Robert Goldman, A4M Chairman, was present to congratulate the
AOFAAM's successful launch, remarking that "South Korea is
an appropriate venue for the AOFAAM's inaugural conference, as
the nation is aging quickly. Experts estimate that by the year
2019, 14% of the South Korean population will be age 65 or older."
Indeed, The Korea Times has reported that the South Korean government
is alarmed at the impending "social and economic burden caused
by a rapidly aging society" [The Korea Times, 30 October
2003]. Dr. Goldman observes that "the efforts of KA3M's Chairman,
Cheol Ho Kim, MD, PhD, in advancing anti-aging medical and scientific
innovation in Korea, are commendable; likewise, I applaud AOFAAM's
Organizing Secretariat, Seung-Yup Ku, MD, PhD, ABAAM, for taking
the initiative to unify nations in the Asia-Pacific under a regional
anti-aging scientific federation."

Representatives of the member nations of AOFAAM,
along with Dr. Robert Goldman, A4M President, officiate the Federation's
launch, displaying official, signed Memorandums of Understanding
that codify the formation of the Federation.
The scientific program was very wide in its scope, covering topics
including basics of hormone chemistry, hormone replacement therapies,
stem cells, cloning, and a broad array of aspects of all specialties
of medicine. Shin Yong Moon, MD, PhD, one of 100 Figures of The
Year as identified by Time Magazine, was a featured lecturer on
the topic of stem cell research and clinical applications. The
sessions were opened by Cheol Ho Kim, MD, PhD and Young Kyun Kim
MD, PhD, and Phong Sahm Ku, MD, PhD.
In
conjunction with this 5th Annual Meeting of the KA3M, the organization
unveiled its new peer-reviewed medical journal, The Korean Journal
of Anti-Aging Medicine. Similarly, the AOFAAM also debuted its
official publication, the peer-reviewed Journal of Anti-Aging
Medical Research. The A4M commends both of these important efforts
in ongoing education and training in the anti-aging medical specialty
throughout Asia.
